Time Off Work for Ketamine Therapy: How to Plan It

How much of your day a ketamine session takes, how to fit a course of treatment around a weekday job, and the basics of medical leave and talking to your employer.

Yes, plan to take the rest of the day off for each ketamine session. At Clear Ketamine Therapy you spend roughly 90 minutes to two hours at the clinic, a responsible adult drives you home, and you cannot drive until the next day, so a same-day return to work is rarely practical. Consultations and follow-ups can happen by telehealth when you are in Florida, which limits time away from work to the treatment days themselves.

How much of your day does a ketamine session take?

Treat each session as a full day away from work. The clinic visit itself takes roughly 90 minutes to two hours, and the hours afterward are for resting, not working.

That clinic time covers preparation, the treatment, and monitored recovery. Ketamine is given as a small injection under the skin, with the dose calculated for you by the supervising clinician, and a clinician keeps watch from the start of the session until you leave with your driver.

The afternoon matters as much as the visit. The ketamine label, which was written for anesthesia, asks patients to wait 24 hours before driving or doing anything hazardous, citing drowsiness and residual effects. If your job involves driving, machinery, heights, or safety decisions, it is off the table until the next day, and it is sensible to treat desk work the same way.

How can you schedule ketamine sessions around a 9-to-5 job?

Because the clinic is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, sessions fall on workdays, so each one will usually mean a day of leave or a flexible arrangement with your employer. A few habits make a course of treatment easier to fit around work:

  • Ask for the whole plan at the outset. Plans are individual, often a run of sessions across several weeks and then a reassessment, so you can request time off in one conversation.
  • If you like a buffer, a Friday session followed by the weekend gives you two quiet days before you return.
  • Book your driver for the same dates when you request leave.
  • Keep check-ins remote when you can. Video visits work as long as you are physically in Florida during the call.
  • Ask HR early whether your employer needs any paperwork, so forms do not become a last-minute scramble.

Can follow-up appointments fit into a workday?

Often, yes. Consultations, planning conversations, and follow-up visits can take place by video, so they do not need a trip to the clinic, as long as you are in Florida when the call happens.

A video visit fits more easily into a lunch hour than a clinic trip does. Choose somewhere private, since you will be discussing your health. The ketamine itself is only ever given at the clinic, never at home.

What should you tell your employer?

Only as much as you choose to. For ordinary time off, it is often enough to say you have a scheduled medical treatment that takes the rest of the day and means someone else has to drive you home.

Formal leave is different. If you apply for leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act, your employer may ask for a certification from a health care provider. The Department of Labor says a diagnosis is not required on that certification, though it must support the need for leave. Employers must also keep employee medical records confidential and in files separate from ordinary personnel records.

If your employer asks for a provider's certification, raise it with the clinical team early so there is time to discuss it.

Does FMLA cover time off for ketamine therapy?

It may. The Family and Medical Leave Act can protect unpaid time off for your own serious health condition, and the Department of Labor names chronic conditions such as depression and anxiety among those that can qualify when they cause periodic incapacity and need ongoing treatment.

Here are the basic rules, as the Department of Labor summarizes them:

  • Covered employers include private employers with 50 or more employees in 20 or more workweeks, as well as public agencies and schools.
  • You are generally eligible after 12 months with the employer and at least 1,250 hours worked in the 12 months before leave, at a worksite with at least 50 employees within 75 miles.
  • Eligible employees can take up to 12 workweeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period, and group health coverage continues on the same terms.
  • When medically necessary, leave can be taken in separate blocks of time or as a reduced schedule rather than all at once.
  • Give notice as soon as possible and practical. If your employer requests a medical certification, it must allow 15 calendar days for you to provide it.

A note on what this page can and cannot tell you

This is a general summary of federal rules, not legal advice. Your employer's own leave and sick-time policies may also apply, and HR can tell you how requests work where you are. Whether a particular absence qualifies under the FMLA is decided under its rules, not by the clinic.

How should we reach you?
Best time to reach you (optional)

In person or by telehealth

You can be seen both ways. Consultations, planning conversations, and follow-up visits happen in person at our Tampa clinic or by telehealth — whichever works better for you.

Ketamine itself is always administered in person, at the clinic, with a clinician monitoring you throughout. We do not prescribe ketamine for use at home.

Telehealth visits require you to be physically located in Florida at the time of the visit.

How telehealth works here

  • Telehealth is available to patients who are physically located in Florida, and the clinicians providing that care hold active Florida licenses.
  • Your location is confirmed at the start of every telehealth visit. If you are not in Florida, the visit does not go ahead.
  • Ketamine is never prescribed for you to take at home. It is administered only at our clinic, in person, with a clinician monitoring you throughout — a telehealth visit does not change that.
  • You are seen in person before any treatment session, because every session happens at the clinic.
  • A telehealth visit never guarantees that treatment will be offered, any more than an in-person evaluation does.
  • Telehealth is not for emergencies. If you are in crisis or having thoughts of self-harm, call or text 988, or call 911.

Common questions

It is best not to. You will spend roughly 90 minutes to two hours at the clinic, you cannot drive until the next day, and drowsiness can linger into the evening. Treat each session day as a rest day, and return to work the following day if you feel fully alert.
